MASSIVE COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT
END OF CBD AS WE KNOW IT
A proposal for a commercial deve¬lopment bigger than the CBD in its to¬tality was received by the George Municipality. Business owners fear that it could have a de¬vastating impact on the town centre.
The 240 000 m2 development adja¬cent to Blue Moun¬tain Village is being proposed by three developers, Garden Route Mall Investments, Cumulus Projects and Rainbow Place Properties. They signed an agreement of co-operation and registered a single company, Laritza Investments under whose name the project will be exe¬cuted.
According to an independent town planner, Kobus Munro of Setplan, the applicant failed to do an environ¬mental impact as¬sessment, which is required for a de¬velopment of this size. "We find it strange," said Munro
.
"Such a development can mean the end of the CBD as we know it. There are not nearly enough people to keep both the town centre and another commercial area alive. The office park being proposed is bigger than the Garden Rout Mall. It will for certain empty the office space in town"
2010: GEORGE AIRPORT HAS WHAT IT TAKES
A private company called Match was in George recently to Asses the ability and equipment of the George airport to handle the rise in visitor numbers during the Soccer 2010 tournament.
Match is a company that assembles packages for soccer tourists, which in¬clude the flight, stay and tickets to the soccer matches.
The officials of Match was very impressed with George Airport and com¬mented that it was better than they had expected. They were also impressed with the beauty of the area and the high standard of the accommodation.
Brenda Moses, airport manager of the George airport said: "I feel very excited and optimistic that we will fit the stan¬dards that Match requires".
During the 2010 Soccer World Cup, George Airport will be required to pro¬cess up to 4000 visitors.
Match's second visit to the area will be on 9 December 2008.
GOLF SUMMIT FOR FANCOURT
The current global economic turmoil and its effects on the South African and world golf¬ing industry will be the main focus of the fourth annual South African Golf Summit taking place at Fancourt early next year.
Fancourt CEO Ingrid Diesel said the golf industry was un¬deniably affected by the un¬stable financial situation world¬wide and that the local industry had a responsibility to assess the matter thoroughly and act as a united and informed indus¬try.
"There is no better place than the annual SA Golf Summit to analyse the situation from all sides and address the issues appropriately. We invite all stakeholders to attend this very important summit to ensure the future sustainability of this industry," said Diesel.
Reservations for the summit can be made by calling reservations on 044 804 0020 or sending an email to sagolfsummit@fancourt.co.za
The summit will be held bet¬ween 29 March and 1 April 2009.
ADD HOME VALUE WITH SMALL CHANGES
Be clever, this year use your bonus to make an investment in your home by adding value to your existing home.
"A few simple changes, upgrades or additions to a home can make all the difference and you don't need to break the budget to improve the appearance and/or function of certain rooms. This is particularly true for the kitchen and the bathroom that are considered to be the most popular rooms for improvements and remodelling," says Kate van Niekerk, marketing manager for Tile Africa.
She says an inexpensive measure is rather to add design features to the existing wall or floor tiles. For example, kitchen countertops may be too expensive to replace, so opt for a decoratively tiled backsplash area to change the look. Alternatively, add a contrasting colour tile or a border of decorative mosaic tiles to a space for a more creative or colourful impression.
A wonderful and straightforward way of adding a touch of style to a tired area is to introduce an attractive piece of furniture such as a new basin, set of taps, wall cabinet or changing the drawer pulls. Simply change the mirror, vanity, toilet seat or wall cabinet to a bathroom, or change the taps and sinks in the kitchen to give it a newer, fresher look.
If the bath or shower looks a bit dingy, consider just regrouting the tiles and replacing any chipped tiles. Fixtures for bathrooms and kitchens come in a variety of styles depending on your personal taste and allow for a fresh look without the expense and hassle of redoing the whole room.
Van Niekerk says going for an upgrade or a change does not always mean you have to move houses or "break the bank" – but rather look at your current space and how effective small changes can be made with your Christmas bonus.
