INTEREST RATE CUTS
Events have marched on to a point where the first of a series of SARB rate cuts are coming into view, timing as always the prerogative of the SARB.
But do paint in a very high probability for December 2008 and a near certainty for February 2009 for the first cut.
In contrast, the consensus keeps looking well into 2009 for that first rate cut. I have maintained for some time that events may be moving much too fast for that. Expect rate cutting sooner rather than later.
2010 WORLD CUP BID
GEORGE MAYOR GIVES HIS FULL SUPPORT
George is the best suited town to host a 2010 World Cup soccer team at a base camp. It has the necessary in¬frastructure, airport, hotels and accom¬modation. Very lit¬tle will be required to get Outeniqua Stadium upgraded to get it in line with Fifa requirements. So said Mayor of George, Flip de Swardt during a re¬cent interview.
New parking areas are being created in readiness for the in¬ternational Sevens Rugby Tournament in December. Pavi¬lions will be en¬larged at Outeniqua Sports Stadium to accommodate more seats (eventually 20 000 seats by 2010).
"The town would also be geared to facilitate exhibition performance matches. Rosemore Sport Stadium could be upgraded for that purpose. Soccer has a bigger following locally than was originally thought." De Sward said¬
TARGETING TOP SOCCER TEAMS
"It pays to be optimistic and we may as well set our visor high by targeting the top 20 teams participating in the Soccer 2010 World Cup."
This is the opinion of Paul Hoffman who travelled to Germany in 2006 to attend the Soccer World Cup and who still feels optimistic that Eden has a good chance to be a host region.
It will only become clear at the end of 2009, which teams had made it to the finals and would be participating in the World Cup. Only then will it be announced where the teams will be staying - above sea level or below, and what their preferences are.
Public viewing facilities / fan parks must be able to seat tens of thousands of people and have a big screen and are costly venues to create - it could cost up to R10-million.

WHEN GOD SPEAKS, RIGHT HEARTED HUMANS RESPOND
In September, The George Herald re¬ported on the Miracle Christian Centre which was opened in Thembalethu by the Department of Social Services earlier this year.
At the forefront of this centre is Pastor Richard Duruwe and a very supportive team who are striving to change society with their vision of transformation. This vision includes things such as empowering the unemployed, reaching out to orphans and HIV victims, educating youth and assisting the aged and poor.
The centre has enjoyed tremendous sup¬port from local businesses and well-doers thus far. Top Gear, Hartman Butcheries, Nissan and Lewis Stores have shown their support in various ways and Pastor Duruwe expressed his sincere appreciation when he visited the George Herald this week. "These generous donations are assisting us in fulfilling our vision," Past Duruwe said.
ENGINEERING AWARDS CITY IS AMONGST THE BEST
George municipality's engi¬neering directorate is now firm¬ly rated as being amongst the top in the country.
This comes in the wake of being awarded the first prize in the environmental category by the Consulting Engineers of South Africa for running the best engineers project, for the second year running.
In total, George has won 6 awards: one for having the best drinking water, best sewerage works, and last week was named by Municipal IQ, an Intelligence Company, and the sec¬ond most productive town in the Western Cape.
SA VIEWERS GIVEN 3 YEARS DIGITAL TV MIGRATION
As of Saturday, South African households are able to tune into high quality digital broadcast television with the brand new digital terrestrial television (DTT).
What is it?
DTT, also called digital terrestrial transmission, refers to modes of tele¬vision broadcasting which do not in¬volve satellite trans¬mission. Besides more pro¬gramming and tele¬vision channel choices, digital broadcasting will allow government to provide viewers with government services over tele-vision, special ser¬vices for the visu¬ally or hearing im¬paired and pro¬gramming in a mul¬tiplicity of lan¬guages.
