WHEELS START TO ROLL FOR ANNUAL OCC

Preparations are well underway for the city of George's annual Outeniqua Wheelchair Challenge (OCC) presented by Vodacom and Parmalat SA, which co­incides with Valentine's Day next year.

The organising committee is preparing for a record 550 athletes who will compete for prize money totalling R229 000 in 44 categories over three distances.

DESIGNER GOLF COURSE GO-AHEAD
Le Grand resort can now add "Golf Resort" to their name, as their much awaited ­permission has been granted to go ahead and build a Greg Norman signature, 18-hole Links golf course - on the outskirts of Pacaltsdorp.

After receiving the much waited approval of the Envi­ronmental Management an (EMP) in August this year, the construction of an 18-hole golf course at Le Grande Golf Resort got off to a dusty start last month.

Greentee Projects from Cape Town were given the al approval in January 2007 after Record of Decis­ion permission was fi­lly issued in December 2006.

Adjacent to the golf course, 312 single residences are to be erected in the busy construction phase that lies ahead.

NEW PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEM

Sharples Environmental Ser­vices has been appointed to complete the environmental impact assessment (EIA) for a proposed bus depot that forms part of the bigger George Mo­bility Strategy (a new public transport system).

According to an information document from Sharples, the proposed depot will include as­sociated infrastructure such as wash bays and fuel storage tanks. The proposal is subject to a full EIA. The proposed site (and an alternative site) iden­tified is situated in PW Botha Boulevard in the Tamsui industrial area.


OUBAAI GOLF RESORT

Having acquired two international coveted awards, Oubaai Golf Resort is now officially rated as one of the best in the world.

The awards were handed over to Resort General Manager William McIntyre in London at a glittering gala event over the weekend. The "CNBC Property Awards 2008" was awarded for Best Golf De­velopment in South Africa. The second award - Best Architecture (Multiple Units) in South Africa - is an affirmation that the esteemed panel of judges who visited the resort, were duly impressed with the coastal contemporary architectural style throughout.

OUBAAI FIVE STAR HOTEL

Oubaai's five star Hotel currently un­der construction, to be managed by the internationally renowned Global Hy­att Corporation, is destined to meet world class stan­dards and due to open in 2009.

This week, Oubaai added the coveted International Prop­erty Awards for 2008 to their list of achievements (see story elsewhere).

Shortly after construction began in November last year, Karafi Hospitality and Global Hyatt Corporation signed a management agreement for the 100-room Hyatt Re­gency Oubaai.

SONGS OF PRAISE FINAL CONCERT THIS YEAR
Conducted by Richard Cock, several local choirs will take part in the George Music Society's final concert of the year, Songs of Praise.

The performers include the South Cape Children's Choir, Outeniqua Primary School Choir as well as the South Cape Sym­phony Orchestra.

Since starting Songs of Praise in 1991 with only one concert, the project has grown to accommo­date performances in 10 centres every year.

With approximately 18 000 peo­ple attending the concerts an­nually and nearly 2 000 choristers of all ages and backgrounds tak­ing part, an amount of over one million is generated every year.

‘ANYTHING GOES’ ROUND TABLE’S 8TH MELODRAMA

With "Anything Goes" as this year's theme for the George Round Table's Melodrama, a crew of 60 amateur performers will give a lively upbeat tribute to new and old popular songs.

PLAYER’S TOURNAMENT AT FANCOURT

November will see South Africa and Fancourt joining the international Gary Play­er Invitational series that has brought top participants around the globe together for golf and giving back at sister events in USA, United Kingdom and China for more than a decade.

The four-event series be­gan in London and after stops in the USA and China, will culminate in South Africa-between 27-30 No­vember at The Links at Fan­court.
NINE CENTRAL BANKS LIKELY TO CUT RATES

Johannesburg - In a desperate attempt to restore stability to financial markets, at least nine central banks are likely to synchronise interest rates cuts within 10 days. This is the view of Michael Power, an investment strategist at Investec Asset Management, who yesterday predicted that South Africa's Reserve Bank "will follow almost immediately".

CANAL WALK SCOOPS AWARDS

Canal Walk was announced Cape Town Best Shopping Centre at a gala event at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
The Best of Cape Town Competition was initiated by Good Hope FM in order to honour those people and institutions that excel in their fields.In addition to winning Cape Town Best Shopping Centre, Canal Walk was also nominated in the category of Best Architectural Design Building.
